Witness To Hope-The Biography of Pope John Paul II
By: George Weigel
When Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, the extraordinary global outpouring of affection and regard for this old and, in recent years, increasingly crippled Polish priest and bishop suggested that Karol Wojtyła had, in fact, influenced more lives in more diverse circumstances than any human being of his time. In African villages and Brazilian favellas, in Manhattan office towers and Calcutta slums, in homes and apartments and government offices on every continent, men and women felt that they had lost someone they had loved someone who had inspired them to live in a different way. Reaching for historical analogies, some proposed that not since Winston Churchill’s death in 1965 had the entire world had such a common sense of an epic life come to an end. The analogy made considerable sense. [download]

The War Come To Me
The War Come To Me
By: Eva Broessler Weissman and Gregory Moore
Akaleidoscope contains various pieces reflected by mirrors with patterns that change when rotated. So perhaps this introduction is in many ways like a kaleidoscope. The War Came To Me: A Story of Endurance and Survival basically refers to the years 1938 until 1945. This is but a small fraction of my life but a very important one. Therefore, I am grateful that in the following chapters, Professor Moore has interwoven some of my and my sister’s experiences into historic text so that the book can serve for educational purposes as well as for human interest for a general readership. I am writing this introduction to provide autobiographical material that puts additional emphasis on the personal side of the story. I am elaborating mainly on the parts of my background that might have prepared me to cope with the adversities I encountered without physical or mental damage. [download]

The Kitchen Witch
The Kitchen Witch
By: Annette Blair
LOGAN Kilgarven plucked a bright red leaf off the sleek black hearse in his neighbor’s driveway. “What if she really is a witch?” Jessie Harris laughed as she buffed the chrome hood ornament. “Melody Seabright is no more a witch than I am.” “Jess, I only moved into the apartment above her a couple of days ago, and already I’ve heard that she’s flighty, unpredictable, and quite possibly a witch. After all that, you still think I should ask her to baby-sit?” Jessie straightened, raised a speaking brow, and gazed at him through the top of her bifocals. “What would have happened to you,” she asked, “if I had believed what people said about the town bad boy when you stood before me in juvenile court all those years ago?”. Strategy By Design-A Process of Strategy Innovation
Strategy By Design-A Process of Strategy Innovation
By: James Carlopio
Organizational strategy is typically conceived and developed as an extension of the past and present. We analyze the market, the competition, the industry, and our internal resources and capabilities. We then reposition ourselves in existing m arkets or we extend our product/services into developing or adjacent markets. The future is assumed to be a linear extension of the past and present, and our rational analytical techniques help us to do this well. What happens, however, when the future is not a linear extension of the past and present? What happens when we want to innovate and reinvent our business model, our industry, or our world? How can we radically add value and provide high quality at low cost? How can we reinvent the ailing automobile industry or the air travel experience? [download]

Managing for Results
Managing for Results
By: Robin Lim
This is a “what to do” book. It deals with the economic tasks that any business has to discharge for economic performance and economic results. It attempts to organize these tasks so that executives can perform them systematically, purposefully, with understanding, and with reasonable probability of accomplishment. It tries to develop a point of view, concepts and approaches for finding what should be done and how to go about doing it. This book draws on practical experience as a consultant to businesses of all kinds and sizes for a good many years. Everything in it has been tested and is being used today effectively in real businesses. There are illustrations of, and references to, concrete situations on almost every page. [download]

The Mafia Encyclopedia
The Mafia Encyclopedia
By: Carl Sifakis
Had this book appeared a few years earlier, the introduction would have focused on the question of whether or not there really was a “Mafia.” In previous decades there had been a multi-pronged drive to deny the existence not only of the Mafia, but also, in some cases, of organized crime. Italian-American groups denied the existence of the Mafia. J. Edgar Hoover and many other law officials did the same, and so did a number of scholars. Naturally, the mafiosi agreed with them. But by late 1986 such arguments had all but ceased. Lawyers for leading mafiosi, brought to trial for being bosses of organized crime, went before juries and conceded that the Mafia did exist and that their clients might even have been members of it. Ethnic Italian Americans and others have since changed their position. [download]

In the religious history of India, perhaps no one has, at any rate during the last one thousand years, played a more prominent part than Sankara, a connected account of whole life and teaching is presented briefly in English in this volume. It is hoped that the readers of this volume will find there in such materials of thought and history as will enable them to know accurately the position of Sankara in the evolution of the national religious life of the Hindu people, and enable them alsa at the same time to estimate correctly the great value of his work in life as viewed from the stand point of history. How he was the product of the age in which he was born, how he in his turn impressed his personality on the unity of Hindu life and civilsation, how his work as a scholar and reformer has been in harmony with the historic genius of the Hindu Nation.

William Shakespear-Comedies
Edited By: Harold Bloom
My introduction surveys Shakespeare’s comedy, finding it his natural mode while indicating also its superb range, from knockabout farce to visionary romance. Lisa Marciano studies the dark comedy of Twelfth Night, where Viola and Feste serve as the most charming of moral teachers. As You Like It, most original and refreshing of pastorals, finds enlightened defense of its genre from Linda Woodbridge, while cuckoldry, Shakespeare’s knowingly obsessive jest, is illuminated in The Merchant of Venice and As You Like It by Emily Detmer-Goebel. The servant-master relationship in The Two Gentlemen of Verona is studied by Elizabeth Rivlin, after which Roy Eriksen examines originating process in The Taming of the Shrew. Castiglione’s influence in Much Ado About Nothing is set forth by Philip D. Collington, while Kent Cartwright chronicles magical aspects of The Comedy of Errors. [download]

William Shakespear-Histories
William Shakespear-Histories
Edited By: Harold Bloom
Shakespeare’s greatest history play is the ten-act drama constituted by King Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2. Judged as a single work, this vast Falstaffiad is one of Shakespeare’s major achievements, akin to Antony and Cleopatra, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, and The Winter’s Tale. The four high tragedies Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth stand a little apart, in their own cosmos, as does The Tempest. The Falstaffiad is at the center of Shakespeare’s work, and its superb protagonist, Sir John Falstaff, rivals Shakespeare’s other triumphs in the invention of the human: Hamlet, Rosalind, Iago, Lear, Macbeth, Cleopatra. Criticism, particularly in our century, is frequently both inaccurate and unkind about Falstaff. That is because the brilliant and uncanny wit outfaces and outrages his undertakers. [download]

Legends of The Egyptian Gods
Legends of The Egyptian Gods
By: E.A. Wallis Budge
The papyrus is about 16 ft. 8 in. in length, and is 9¼ in. in width. It contains 21 columns of hieratic text which are written in short lines and are poetical in character, and 12 columns or pages of text written in long lines; the total number of lines is between 930 and 940. The text is written in a small, very black, but neat hand, and may be assigned to a time between the XXVIth Dynasty and the Ptolemaic Period. The titles, catch-words, rubrics, names of Apep and his fiends, and a few other words, are written in red ink. There are two colophons; in the one we have a date, namely, the “first day of the fourth month of the twelfth year of Pharaoh Alexander, the son of Alexander,” i.e., B.C. 311, and in the other the name of the priest who either had the papyrus written, or appropriated it, namely, Nes-Menu, or Nes-Amsu. By: Jennifer Gappone and Gradiva Couzin
How is your website doing on the search engines? Need a little help? Well, you’re holding the right book in your hands. This book will walk you through the steps to achieve a targeted, compelling presence on the major search engines. There are no secrets or tricks here, just down-to-earth, real-world advice and a clear program to get you where you want to be. And, with luck, you’ll even have a little fun along the way! If you could think of the person that you would most want visiting your website, who would that person be? Traditional advertisers (TV, magazines, newspaper, direct mail) might describe this person in terms of their demographics: 18 to 24 years old? Male or female? Wealthy or not so wealthy? But in the world of search, our focus is very different. [download]

My Secret Garden
My Secret Garden
By: Nancy Friday
I began to be interested in sexual fantasies several years ago when I realized how much you could learn about the person you love by examining his or her fantasies. For it is pretty certain that sexual fantasies do reflect one’s secret vision of ideal sexual activity. That doesn’t mean I think you should take your lover’s dreams literally (most fantasies feature highly exaggerated behaviour), but you should become aware that buried in his or her favourite sexual fantasy is a core of desire to experience a special psychological attitude or activity and the accompanying physical sensations. You won’t really know your lover until you have unearthed those hidden desires. Nor will you have achieved complete trust and intimacy until you have been able to share your fantasies with each other and have them accepted. Perhaps this book will break the barrier of silence. Imperium
By: Prancis Parker Yockey
Much has been said already about this unique and disturbing book, but this much is reasonably certain: A thousand times more is yet to be said. Imperium is the first sequel the literary world knows to Spengler’s monumental The Decline of the West. In fact, the author of Imperium does more than even Spengler attempted he defines and creates the pathology of Culture in all of its infinitely urgent importance, including the discipline of Cultural Vitalism. Imperium rejects the Nineteenth Century: the parched fossils of its thought Marx, Freud and the scientific-technical world outlook; its exhausted political nostrums the pluralistic state, liberalism, democracy, communism, internationalism; all of which fail to satisfy the organically vital realities of politics. Imperium presents unique and almost esoteric political, social and historical definitions and explanations which shall become more widely known indeed, commonly understood if our West survives. Tecumseh-A Biography
Tecumseh-A Biography
By: Amy H. Sturgis
The story of Tecumseh is more than the tale of one man. Tecumseh was a Shawnee who was born in a time of turmoil, became an influential leader of his people, and died while still at the height of his strength. But even during his lifetime, Tecumseh’s personal story became intertwined with legend. His potency as an international figure drew from myth as well as reality a point that did not escape Tecumseh, his allies, or his enemies, all of whom played roles in managing and manipulating the mystique that developed around him. In the nineteenth century, published works about Tecumseh were as likely to be heroic epic poems or highly imaginative novels as researched biographical accounts. Scholars in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have sought to disentangle Tecumseh’s reality from fiction, only to discover that Tecumseh’s story can be fully understood only when both the man and the legend are taken into account. Barack Obama-Dreams from My Father
By: Barack Obama
I ORIGINALLY INTENDED A VERY different book. The opportunity to write it first arose while I was still in law school, after my election as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, a legal periodical largely unknown outside the profession. A burst of publicity followed that election, including several newspaper articles that testified less to my modest accomplishments than to Harvard Law School’s peculiar place in the American mythology, as well as America’s hunger for any optimistic sign from the racial front-a morsel of proof that, after all, some progress has been made. A few publishers called, and I, imagining myself to have something original to say about the current state of race relations, agreed to take off a year after graduation and put my thoughts to paper. Contemporary Financial Management
Contemporary Financial Management
By: Moyer – McGuigan – Kretlow
The financial management field continues to experience exciting change and growth. Financial practitioners are increasingly employing new financial management techniques and sophisticated computer resources to aid in their decision making. “Financial engineers” have created new derivative financial instruments and transactions, such as options, financial futures contracts, options on futures contracts, foreign currency swaps, and interest rate swaps, to help managers manage risk and increase shareholder wealth. Many domestic industries have been restructured because of the pressures of foreign competition. Leveraged buyout transactions also have forced managers to make more careful use of their firm’s resources. Corporate reformers have focused attention on the structure of corporate governance relationships and the impact of alternative managerial compensation packages on firm performance. [download]

Principles of International Environmental Law
By: Philippe Sands
A wide range of actors participate in those aspects of the international legal order which address environmental issues, including the negotiation, implementation and enforcement of international environmental agreements. Apart from state delegations, which play the central role, a visitor to ozone or climate change negotiations would find international organisations and non-state actors actively involved. International environmental law is characterised by this phenomenon which, with the possible exception of the human rights field, renders it unique. Various reasons explain this state of affairs. States are involved because they are still the pre-eminent international legal persons. International organisations participate because they have been created by states to address particular environmental issues. [download]

Project Financing and The International Financial Markets
By: Esteban J. Buljevick and Yoon S. Park
Overview of Financial Innovations in the International Financial Markets. The past several decades have witnessed a phenomenal expansion of the international financial markets in terms of both volume and diversity. International finance had been important in providing funds for expansion of railroads and other infrastructure projects, such as the Suez Canal, in many parts of the world starting from the late 19th century. However, for more than 30 years from the Great Depression of the 1930s until the late 1950s, international finance was in a state of hibernation. The modern version of the international financial markets originated in the late 1950s with the emergence of the Eurodollar market. Several observations can be made about international finance from the late 19th century until the onset of the Great Depression. First, banks were engaged in two main types of international financial intermediation during that period. [download]

Is it nature or nurture that sends a person out onto the Road-that whispers in one’s ear that it’s time to take off and make for the horizon, just to see what’s out there? The urge to travel to open our minds and move beyond the familiar is as gold as man himself. It’s what drove the ancient Romans to visitAthens’s Acropolis andVerona’s amphitheater. It’s what sent Marco Polo off on his momentous journey easto and what moved St. Augustine of Hippo to writeo “The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only one page.” Whether we go to Londonfor the weekend or to a place thatos utterly alien, travel changes uso sometimes superficially, sometimes profoundly. Nelson Mandela–Journey to Freedom
Nelson Mandela–Journey to Freedom
By: Peter Limb
Nelson Mandela is the most famous African today. His amazing rollercoaster ride to freedom after 27 years in apartheid prisons to become president of the new “rainbow nation” of South Africa is now legendary. Equally impressive is his successful reconciliation of a deadly conflict seen by many commentators as intractable. In the period of transition from apartheid to democratic rule, and again as South Africa’s first black president from 1994 to 1999, Mandela brought together bitter enemies and unified a nation. He did this by leading from example with a lack of bitterness at his own long years of imprisonment under the apartheid system, and by patiently listening to all sides of the political spectrum, a trait typical of the wise African ruler that he was. Nelson Mandela is the most famous African today. His amazing rollercoaster ride to freedom after 27 years in apartheid prisons to become president of the new “rainbow nation” of South Africa is now legendary. The Psychology of Emotion
The Psychology of Emotion
By: K.T. Strongman
Emotion is a daily, if not a moment-by-moment, occurrence. However, a treatise on emotion theory has to jump away temporarily from the everyday and instead begin with a consideration of what makes a good theory of emotion. If one were setting out to build a theory of emotion, what would one necessarily include, what issues would have to be dealt with? Although these are perfectly reasonable questions, they do not delve quite far enough. In order to make judgements about what is a good theory of emotion it is important to have some understanding of what makes a good theory in general, or, if not in general, at least in the science of psychology. This, then, is the starting point. There have been many penetrating analyses of the characteristics of good theory, but to reiterate them would be to go too far. It is enough to mention a few that might be considered particularly significant in the context of the present endeavour. [download]

The Big Book Marketing
The Big Book Marketing
Edited By: Anthony G. Bennett
Why does anyone choose to buy one product instead of another? Why does one product succeed (making billions of dollars) and another languish (losing money)? Product providers of goods and service are constantly in search of new tools to make their product the successful product, the one that sells. These tools are collectively called marketing. A dynamic marketing effort can make the difference for a product and propel a company into the billion-dollar category. Why did customers around the world, who typically watch action films, flock to see Paramount Picture’s The First Wives Club, a romantic comedy? Why did customers who were happy using steel tennis rackets buy Wilson’s new carbon fiber racket?. [download]

The American Jesuits-A History
The American Jesuits-A History
By: Raymond A. Schroth, S.J.
The Society of Jesus’ first adventure in North America neither began nor ended well. It is September 14, 1566, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and a large Spanish ship, with a Flemish crew, a contingent of Spanish soldiers, and three Jesuit missionaries aboard, having been blown out to sea twice by hurricanes and storms, sits tranquilly offshore by the northern coast of Florida, right near the future Georgia border, waiting for the proper moment to send an exploratory team to the beach in their one remaining boat. They are lost. And they are almost out of water. They separated from their main fleet a month before and have been wandering up and down the Florida coast in search of the port of Saint Helena. The Greatest Money Making-Secret in History
The Greatest Money Making-Secret in History
By: Joe Vitale
It was a really hot summer’s day many years ago. I was on my way to pick up two items at the grocery store. In those days, I was a frequent visitor to the supermarket because there never seemed to be enough money for a whole week’s food-shopping at once. You see, my young wife, after a tragic battle with cancer, had died just a few months earlier. There was no insurance just many expenses and a mountain of bills. I held a part-time job, which barely generated enough money to feed my two young children.Things were bad really bad. And so it was that day, with a heavy heart and four dollars in my pocket, I was on my way to the supermarket to purchase a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread. The children were hungry and I had to get them something to eat. [download]

Martin Luther King Jr-The Dream
Martin Luther King Jr-The Dream
By: Drew D. Hansen
In 1963, the year that Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered one of the most famous speeches in American history, blacks in America lived under a racial caste system. Twelve million of the nation’s nineteen million black citizens lived in the South, where Jim Crow segregation pervaded nearly every aspect of life. Southern towns maintained separate hotels, beaches, bathrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. Nearly a decade after the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, school desegregation was at a standstill. Fewer than one-half of 1 percent of black children in the South attended public schools with white children. Many Southern states operated completely segregated school systems, in open defiance of Brown. [download]

some fathers tell their kids about mythical home run hitters who won the World Series, or of courageous expeditions to Antarctica or the moon. My father’s story to me was about Enrico Fermi and the scientists who created a nuclear chain reaction beneath the stands of the football stadium at the University of Chicago during World War II. As a lifelong Chicagoan, Dad preferred this story to those about heroic men at Los Alamos. It was at this moment under Stagg Field, he believed, that brilliant men had convened for some greater scientific purpose. The only story as awe inspiring was the one he told of the Founding Fathers, who converged on Philadelphia in 1776 to establish, as Dad put it, the most enlightened democracy in the world. [download]

The Principles of Beautiful Web Design
The Principles of Beautiful Web Design
By: Jason Beaird
For many web developers, myself included, the most intimidating part of the design process is getting started. Imagine for a moment that you’re sitting at your desk with nothing other than a cup of coffee and the business card of a potential client who needs a basic corporate website. Usually, a business card speaks volumes about a company’s identity, and can be used as design inspiration. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with the card for Smith’s Services in this book. It’s black and white, all text, no character, blah. Talk about a blank canvas! So, where do you go from here? You need a plan … and you need to contact Mr. Smith. With some critical input from the client about what his company actually does, and by gathering information about the content you have to work with, you’ll be able to come up with a successful layout and design. Process Management
Process Management
By: Hans de Bruijn
In recent years, the world of management has given considerable attention to the process aspects of management and change. Many changers define their own role as that of a process manager, process supervisor or facilitator. A frequently heard complaint about change processes is that too little attention is paid to the process (and too much complainantsadd to the substance). This attention for process management tends to be based on a distinction between substantive and process aspects of changes. Substantive aspects concern the question what changes are desirable, process aspects concern the manner how these changes can be recognized and implemented. In many cases, the substantive aspects of change are found to be so complex that express and targeted attention for the process aspects is necessary to complete a change process successfully. The Ab Smart Fitness Plan
The Ab Smart Fitness Plan
By: Adam Weiss, D.C.
How often have you admired the midsection of a model on a magazine cover or on TV? No question, a well defined set of abs is appealing. But just wanting a six-pack isn’t enough. You’ve got to put together the right combination of exercises, determine the number of sets and repetition ranges to perform, and train the muscles frequently enough to elicit results and just about everyone has a different opinion about what works best! Moreover, it’s not as if you can just do the exercises and be done; you have to watch what you put into your mouth and burn enough calories to see your results. Women and men have been trying to lose weight and get their waistlines flatter, smaller, and stronger for years. Their reasons vary: some want to look and feel better to become more appealing and attractive, others take up exercising their midsection because they hope to prevent back pain, and some people do it as conditioning for sporting events. Say What You Mean Get What You Want
Say What You Mean Get What You Want
By: Judith C. Tingley, Ph.D.
I have a vivid memory of my early attempts at assertive communication. It was twenty-five years ago, give or take a year, and I was a nurse with a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing. I had always had some difficulty with the “subservient” approach that seems de rigueur for nurses (generally all female) with doctors (generally all male). Plus, I was married to a physician who basically had the same thoughts about wives, at least at that time, that he did about nurses. When I discovered assertive communication, my life changed. I saw that there was a way to be direct, open, and honest without being obnoxious. I realized I could express myself clearly and concisely without resorting to manipulation or intimidation. I was an immediate convert. [download]

Public Debt and Economic Growth
Public Debt and Economic Growth
By: Alfred Greiner and Bettina Fincke
The question of how public debt affects economies has had a long tradition. In the 19th century David Ricardo set up what nowadays is called the Ricardian equivalence theorem. According to that theorem budget deficits today require higher taxes in the future when a government cuts taxes without changing present or future public spending. Given that households are forward looking they will realize that they have to pay higher taxes in the future so that their total tax burden remains unchanged. As a consequence, households will reduce their consumption and increase savings in order to meet the future tax burden. The Ricardian equivalence theorem is based on the inter-temporal budget constraint of the government and on the permanent income hypothesis. The first principle states that public debt must be sustainable in the sense that outstanding debt today must be equal to the present value of future government surpluses. [download]

Hemingway freely proclaimed his relationship to Huckleberry Finn, and there is some basis for the assertion, except that there is little in common between the rhetorical stances of Twain and Hemingway. Kipling’s Kim, in style and mode, is far closer to Huckleberry Finn than anything Hemingway wrote. The true accent of Hemingway’s admirable style is to be found in an even greater and more surprising precursor: Th is grass is very dark to be from the white heads of old mothers, Darker than the colorless beards of old men, Dark to come from under the faint red roofs of mouths. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Einstein
By: Gary F. Moring
Most of us have heard of Albert Einstein. His face can be found on T-shirts and posters, and his name is associated with atomic energy, prestigious awards, and many young individuals who win science fairs. Some people have called him the greatest scientific genius of the century. He was welcomed in the United States as a hero and often treated as a Hollywood star. Who was this legendary figure who not only had great knowledge, but great wisdom as well? Albert Einstein changed the face of physics. His revolutionary ideas would forever alter the way science viewed the universe. He presented ideas that would unify different areas of physics, making connections between concepts that had never been understood before. The insights that were expressed in his theories revealed a much deeper order to the universe than had previously been known. Although Einstein is most often thought of in relation to his scientific contributions, he impacted many other areas of human endeavor as well. [download]

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to The Science of Everything
By: Steve Miller
Did you ever wonder how somebody ever figured out all the details of making a cellphone system work? What about those giant MRI machines that can take a picture of your insides without a single incision? Then there is the universe. We think we know at least something about how it started billions of years ago and where it’s going billions of years in the future. How can we possibly know anything about an event that occurred 14 billion years ago? Science is too often presented either as a huge database of facts or as an endeavor that is open only to a highly educated group of elite thinkers. It is neither of these. In its essence, science is a process, a way of looking at a question and finding an answer. Step-by-step, scientists look at a problem and ask, “How can I test this to see if it is true?” Asking one question at a time, they have built a body of knowledge too vast to be held in single library. Louis Armstrong–An American Genius
Louis Armstrong–An American Genius
By: James Lincoln Collier
When Louis Armstrong died on July 6, 1971, the tens of millions of people all over the world who mourned him remembered him as an endearing child of nature who became famous singing improbable tunes like “Hello, Dolly” and “Blueberry Hill” in a voice choked with gravel. He was the cheerful, eager-to-please entertainer who mugged his way through his songs, talked a little comic jive talk, and occasionally played the trumpet, presenting a stage personality uncomfortably close to the lovable clown. What only a tiny fraction of those people knew and would still be astonished to realize was that Louis Armstrong was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century music. Indeed, a case can be made for the thesis that he was the most important of them all, for almost single-handedly he remodeled jazz and, as a consequence, had a critical effect on the kinds of music that came out of it. Raven Williams was a small, slender woman who moved quickly, with a thin, underlying nervousness that was unaccountably appealing. She was tanned deep gold from the California sun, but at twenty-five her skin was as smooth and dewy soft as a child’s. She pampered it when she remembered and ignored it when she forgot. It never seemed to make any difference. Her long hair was thick and straight and true black. [download]

It was easy to see herself in the quietly dignified, stalwart Gary Cooper role, preparing to face down the canny, vengeance-seeking gunslinger. bu damn it, Deanna thought, Chicago was her town. Angela was the outsider. It suited Angela’s sense of the dramatic, Deanna supposed, to demand a showdown in the very studio where they both had climbed ambition’s slippery ladder. But it was Deanna’s studio now, and it was her show that garnered the lion’s share of the ratings points. [download]

The train ride seemed endless, and Serenity was tired. The argument the night before with Tony had not helped her disposition, plus the long flight from Washington to Paris, and now the arduous hours in the stuffy train had her gritting her teeth to hold back the groan. Her continued refusal to be pressured into marriage had provoked several minor tiffs, but Tony had wanted her, and his patience seemed inexhaustible. [download]

Principles of Commercial Law
Principles of Commercial Law
By: Professor Michael Furmston
Many sale of goods cases are decided by the application of the rules of general contract law. For instance, the rules as to whether there is a contract at all (offer and acceptance, consideration and so on) are basically the same for all contracts. There is, however, a body of rules which is peculiar to sale of goods transactions or which is applied by analogy to transactions like hire purchase or hire. One problem is to tell which questions are answered by contract law and which are answered by sales law. It is not easy to answer this question but, for the moment, do not worry about it. Be aware as you are going along that the problem exists. When you have finished the course, you will usually be able to see what the answer is in any particular situation. [download]

The Albanians-A Modern History
The Albanians-A Modern History
By: Miranda Vickers
Since 1945 it has been the policy of Albanian archaeological exploration to establish the link between the ancient Illyrians and modern Albanians, thereby proving the continuity of Albanian settlement not only in the modern state of Albania but also in the disputed territory of Kosova in Serbia. There are numerous theories as to the exact origins of the Illyrians, and whether or not they are the ancestors of the modern Albanians. It is now generally accepted that by the seventh century BC certain tribes sharing a common Illyrian language and culture had settled in the territory now known as Albania. Contemporary scholars describe the number of tribes who at one time occupied much of the Balkan peninsula as far north as the Danube as ‘Illyrian’. But whether Greeks or Illyrians inhabited much of the southern region of present-day Albania, known as Epirus, remains a highly controversial issue. [download]

[download]

Her name is Esther; she is a war correspondent who has just returned from Iraq because of the imminent invasion of that country; she is thirty years old, married, without children. He is an unidentified male, between twenty-three and twenty-five years old, with dark, Mongolian features. The two were last seen in a café on the Rue du Faubourg St.Honoré. The police were told that they had met before, although no one knew how often: Esther had always said that the man who concealed his true identity behind the name Mikhail was someone very important, although she had never explained whether he was important for her career as a journalist or for her as a woman. The police began a formal investigation. Various theories were put forward kidnapping, blackmail, a kidnapping that had ended in murder none of which were beyond the bounds of possibility given that, in her search for information, her work brought her into frequent contact with people who had links with terrorist cells. The Witch of Portobello

No one lights a lamp in order to hide it behind the door: the purpose of light is to create more light, to open people’s eyes, to reveal the marvels around. No one sacrifices the most important thing she possesses: love. No one places her dreams in the hands of those who might destroy them. No one, that is, but Athena. A long time after Athena’s death, her former teacher asked me to go with her to the town of Prestonpans in Scotland. There, taking advantage of certain ancient feudal powers which were due to be abolished the following month, the town had granted official pardons to 81 people and their cats who were executed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for practising witchcraft. The Valkyries
The Valkyries

THEY HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR ALMOST SIX HOURS. FOR THE hundredth time, he asked the woman at his side if they were on the right road. For the hundredth time, she looked at the map. Yes, they were going the right way, even though their surroundings were green, and a river ran nearby, and there were trees along the road. “I think we should stop at a gas station and check,” she said. They drove on without speaking, listening to old songs on the radio. Chris knew that it wasn’t necessary to stop at a gas station, because they were on the right road even if the scenery around them was completely different from what they had expected. But she knew her husband well. Paulo was nervous and uncertain, thinking that she was misreading the map. He would feel better if they stopped and asked. “What are we doing here?” “I have a task to perform,” he answered. “Strange task,” she said. [download]

Barack Obama-A Biography
Barack Obama-A Biography
By: Joann F. Price
On July 27, 2004, Illinois State Senator Barack Obama delivered the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention. He said, “Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let’s face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely.” When he finished his speech, the audience that listened with rapt attention excitedly waved their arms, hats, and signs, thrilled with what they had just heard. Afterward, those watching on television said that they had stood and cheered, many admitting they danced. Some wondered what had just happened. For many Democrats, the speech was electrifying and inspiring; for them, it was a joyful time. And those from the other side of the political aisle who watched and listened had to agree: this fresh face, this politico, unknown to nearly everyone in the country outside of his home state of Illinois, had just delivered a remarkable speech. Alfred Hitchcock-Filming Our Fears
Alfred Hitchcock-Filming Our Fears
By: Gene Adair
Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was born on August 13, 1899, in Leytonstone, England, a community on the northeastern edge of London. His father, William Hitchcock, operated a retail and wholesale grocery business specializing in fruits and vegetables. The rooms above the family shop served as living quarters. It was there, at 517 The High Road, that Alfred was born and spent his earliest years under the watchful eye of his mother, Emma. At the time of Alfred’s birth, the family business was thriving, a benefit that came with the area’s swelling population. Located about six miles from central London, Leytonstone had once been a sleepy country village well removed from the bustle of the British capital, but that was rapidly changing. [download]

Leadership Principles for Project Success
Leadership Principles for Project Success
By: Thomas Juli
So, what is so special about projects in the first place? Actually, nothing really. There have always been projects in our daily life, in both the business world and the nonbusiness world. The difference is that today people speak about projects differently. Maybe it is a modern word and people want to sound important when they say it. But still there is nothing new about projects. An obvious advantage of projects is that they produce results in a predetermined and agreed-upon time frame. They can be a relatively short duration of only a day or two or long-running projects of several years. The fact is that projects produce results, tangible or not. They produce results. So, what is the definition of a project? I suggest the following: A project is a set of activities directed toward commonly agreed-upon objectives to be accomplished in a certain time frame which is not endless. The direction of a project is given by its objectives. It is a unique endeavor.. [download]

International Marketing-Analysis and Strategy
International Marketing-Analysis and Strategy
By: Sak Onkvisit and John Shaw
A study of international marketing should begin with an understanding of what marketing is and how it operates in an international context. A definition adopted by the AMA (American Marketing Association) is used as a basis for the definition of international marketing given here: international marketing is the multinational process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives. Only the word multinational has been added. That word implies that marketing activities are undertaken in several countries and that such activities should somehow be coordinated across nations.
