The Book of Bad Habits
By: Hawkins and Laube, MD.
There are people who claim they understand the dos and don’ts of social behavior. Not you or me, obviously, but prim and proper people, expert in those sorts of things, who spend their lives Considering under what circumstances it’s okay to eat French fries with your fingers. Then there are the rest of us. While not the experts, we each have opinions of what is and what isn’t socially acceptable. If you don’t believe me, just ask any two people you know whether it’s okay to spit on the sidewalk. You’ll get an answer for sure probably conflicting but you’ll get one nonetheless. Regrettably, people don’t agree. Not even the experts. So, what is a bad habit you ask? Let’s start with the word bad, which means “unwelcome or unpleasant.” Next, the word habit, which means a “regular practice or tendency.” A bad habit, then, would be the regular practice or tendency of saying or doing something unwelcome or unpleasant. The Competitive Mind
The Competitive Mind
By: Andrew Crouch
This book is about competition between businesses. Thinking about competition between businesses is what I call Strategy, the interaction between competitive minds. Skilful strategic thinking is mindfulness that provides a basis for succeeding in commercial competition. In this book I offer advice in the form of Principles, or guidelines, for outwitting commercial rivals and also, importantly, a mindset for discouraging rivals from doing the outwitting. The principles offered here apply equally well to large companies and small. Among the large, for instance, there is no doubt that the future of Nokia depends, on the understanding Nokia’s executives have of Sony Ericsson’s, Motorola’s and LG’s future intentions. The earlier and better these are known to Jorma Ollila, Nokia’s chairman and chief executive, and others charged with thinking about the fi rm’s competitive manoeuvring, the more fully these ideas can become plans factored into Nokia’s outlook for future business advantage. Psychology
Psychology
By: G. Neil Martin, Neil R. Carlson and William Buskist
If you asked this question of several people, you would probably receive several, very different answers. In fact, if you asked this question of several psychologists, you would still not receive complete agreement on the answer. Psychologists engage in research, teaching, counselling and psychotherapy; they advise industry and government about personnel matters, the design of products, advertising, marketing and legislation; they devise and administer tests of personality, achievement and ability. And yet psychology is a relatively new discipline; the first modern scientific psychology laboratory was established in 1878 and the first person ever to call himself a psychologist was still alive in 1920. In some European universities the discipline of psychology was known as ‘mental philosophy’ not psychology even as late as the beginning of the twentieth century. [download]

Men in Relationships
Men in Relationships
By: Victoria Hilkevitzh Bedford
Why do men and women look disbelieving when we tell them the title of the book we are editing? What is it about the juxtaposition of “men” and “relationships” that elicits an expression of bewilderment and such comments (from men as often as women) as “isn’t that an oxymoron?” But the other side of surprise and confusion is fascination followed by a flood of stories, the same motivation that launched us into delving into this topic in the first place. In this brief introduction, we will address the dissonance that ensues from the expression “men and relationships” and the life course perspective in which we chose to frame the topic. Finally, we will say a few words about the chapters themselves. Such reactions to the title of the book may lie in assumptions about the definition of what constitutes men’s relationships, assumptions that not only differ from those of the chapter authors but also reflect a controversy in the field of men and masculinities. Having An Addictive Personality
Having An Addictive Personality
By: Jay Bridgers
Addiction is a relationship you have with an object (such as a drug or alcohol) or action (such as gambling or having sex). In an addictive relationship, you come to depend on that object or action to meet your emotional needs. For example, a person may eat compulsively to feel comfort, or gamble compulsively to ease loneliness. Often, you and the people around you don’t even realize that an addiction has been formed. But as addiction progresses, it becomes hard to ignore. All kinds of people suffer from addictionsyoung and old, from all walks of life. There are many ideas about why people become addicted. Some theories focus on biological causes, others on emotional causes, and still others on social causes. It isn’t possible to explain addiction simply. Sex, Power and Consent
Sex, Power and Consent
By: Anastasia Powell
CONTEMPORARY WESTERN CULTURE has been described as the ‘age of raunch’, ‘generation sex’ and generation SLUT (Sexually Liberated Urban Teens). These are the times of an unprecedented sexualised, sex-crazed and sex-everywhere culture, following the so-called liberation of the 1960s and 1970s. The rules for negotiating a sexual relationship have changed and are still changing. Today’s young people meaning those born in and after 1982, collectively referred to as ‘Generation Y (Gen-Y)’ or ‘Millennials’ are negotiating their early love and sexual relationships in an increasingly fluid and uncertain environment. The apparent mellowing of traditional values towards sex, marriage and the family mean that Gen-Y is redefining these new rules. But just what is it about these rules that is changing? In what ways have they changed already? In what ways are they still the same?. [download]

Moral Combat
Moral Combat
By: Heidi M. Hurd
Moral philosopher have often feared what we must do is in some manner or another inconsistent with what we can do. Some have worried that morality may be literally contradictory: It may command us both to do certain acts and to refrain from doing those act. Thus some have thought, for example, that we may be both categorically obligated not to kill and categorically obligated to kill in self defense. If threatened with deadly force, we thus do wrong whatever we do. Others have thought that, while morality may not be contradictory, it may be conflicted: it may impose on individuals obligations that cannot be simultaneously satisfied. Sartre, for example, thought it possible that a man might be obligated both to join the free French to defend against Naziism and to stay at home to administer to his failing mother. [download]

I t is rare that we ever have truly unique experiences. This little book, however, will surely provide its readers with experiences whichare unique. The uniqueness may or may not be in the end the result of any particular chapter, or of the book as a whole, but lies rather in the fact that significant bodily changes will be occurring in response to almost every paragraph, in some cases, to every sentence. At the conclusion of a chapter or “exercise,” the reader may discover such changes as the following: that one foot or hand moves better than the other and is also more clearly sensed; that the body has somehow become a bit looser or taller or more erect; that altered states of consciousness have been experienced, leading to altered visual and other perceptions of the environment; and that a variety of changes of different kinds have been experienced from one exercise to the next. Happiness is Free
Happiness is Free
By: Hale Dwoskin and Lester Levenson
What Is Happiness? Quite simply put, happiness is you being your Self. Not the limited self that you pretend to be most of the time, but the unlimited Self that you are and have always been. This is the Self that is always effortlessly present before, during, and after everything else that appears in your experience. You are the radiant yet changeless background that allows for everything else to exist. If that is true, you may be wondering, why is it so hard to discover and why have there been so many books written on the topic including this one? The answer to that is not as simple. We have spent eons pretending to be anything but unlimited. In fact, we have become so good at this pretending to be limited that we have forgotten that it is just a game, a pretense. We now spend most of our time bolstering the illusion that we have created for ourselves, leaving very little time for the inner reflection that can set us free from this totally self-imposed and artificial sense of limitation. We both have a bit of a reputation as systematic reviewers, and a glance down our CVs means that we are guilty as charged. Frankly, it is not always the best reputation to have. Systematic reviews are sometimes seen as largely technical in nature, ignoring the complex and messy reality of healthcare delivery and reducing everything to a few calculations and a pretty graph. The Balance of Power
The Balance of Power
By: Emerson M.S. Niou
Although the causes of international instability and conflict have been the object of intense scholarly concern, the events of our century are not inconsistent with the supposition that we have made little progress in identifying those causes, that, once identified, we have not adequately applied our research to the discovery of correctives, or that those causes have multiplied at a pace that exceeds our abilities of assimilation and analysis. Some scholars amass and analyze vast arrays of data on diplomatic exchanges, military expenditures, economic indicators, the formation of alliances, and the frequency and severity of wars; others apply the mathematics of decision and game theory with varying degrees of sophistication to the description of international relations processes; and still others reason through the meaning and application of concepts and words such as polarity, power, regime, deterrence, neocolonialism, and the balance of power. How to Rise to The Top…and Stay There
By: Alexander R. Margulis
The world is constantly changing, becoming data driven and impersonal. There is a pressing need to preserve old values of loyalty, collegiality, and teamwork Since my previous two books on leadership were written, the world has greatly changed. Some of the points raised and the advice given are no longer valid; more importantly, some of the points and advice can now get you into awkward situations, if not into trouble. The reasons for these changes are multifaceted: Our society has changed and continues to change. For instance, there are many more lawyers who are now dictating how all interactions should be conducted; administrators have proliferated everywhere, making all procedures more complicated and in need of extensive documentation; computers have transformed all our activities by increasing the number of records kept and by making records paperless; [download]

The Moral Advantage
The Moral Advantage
By: William Damon
Some time ago, I gave a lecture to a group of students who had just entered a teacher-training program. In the group, there was the usual smattering of recent college graduates eager to get started on a teaching career. But there were a number of more wizened faces as well, slightly older people in their thirties and forties who were preparing for their first job in a classroom. Where, I wondered, had they come from? What had brought them to this place, after what must have been some serious attempts at first trying something else? After the lecture, I hung around to chat. Soon I found out that some of the older students had dropped out of law or medicine, a couple had been in the military, but by far the greatest number had just left careers in business. Had they failed? In many cases, no, at least not in the material sense. [download]

Why the fuck did you have to move?’ Ishaan’s scream drowned out the stadium din on the TV. I had shifted up to a sofa from the floor. `Huh?’ I said. We were in Ishaan’s house Ishaan, Omi and I. Ishaan’s mom had brought in tea and khakra for us. ‘It is more comfortable to snack on the sofa. That is why I moved.’ `Tendulkar’s gone. Fuck, now at this stage. Omi, don’t you dare move now. Nobody moves for the next five overs.’ I looked at the TV. We were chasing 283 to win. India’s score a ball ago was 256-2 after forty-five overs. Twenty-seven runs in five overs, with eight wickets to spare and Tendulkar on the crease. A cakewalk. The odds were still in India’s favour, but Tendulkar was out. And that explained the frowns on Ishaan’s forehead. ‘The khakra’s crispy,’ Omi said. Ishaan glared at Omi, chiding him for his shallow sensory pleasure in a moment of national grief. Omi and I kept our tea cups aside and looked suitably mournful. [download]

What’s big and ginger and makes you laugh? For those of you who have never seen David Keeling in action, you will have to put aside the image you have now of a carrot in a hat or Chris Evans’s latest TV programme being taken off the air, and focus instead on the common sense that David dishes out in his chapter. For over five years, David has worked with young people who were failing and being failed by the system and has consistently achieved the seemingly impossible task of helping many of them re-engage with, and refocus on, their success in school and beyond. His own story is one that many young people can relate to. He is someone who struggled not only with the narrow academic demands of educational success but also with the relevance of school itself, especially secondary school, where he attended a ‘bog-standard comp’ somewhere off the M1 to the west of D.H. Lawrence. [download]

What Did You Say? What DoYou Mean?
What Did You Say? What DoYou Mean?
By: Jude Welton
Sometimes words mean exactly what they say. This is called the words’ literal meaning. Sometimes words or phrases have a different meaning from this literal meaning. That’s OK, but it might make you feel muddled. For example, if someone says, “He’s let the cat out of the bag,” they don’t usually mean that someone has literally let a cat escape from a bag. They mean that he has let other people know something that was meant to be kept a secret. If someone says, “She’ll bite your head off,” they don’t mean that the person will literally bite anyone’s head off. What the speaker means is that the person is likely to be so annoyed that she speaks in an angry, “snappy” way. If someone says, “I’ve changed my mind,” they don’t mean that they have got a different brain from the one they had before! [download]

In the same way cerebral gymnastic, provided by puzzles and tests, give you the opportunity to maximize your brain potential. The human brain is the most vital organ in the human body and our most valuable asset. It gives rise to our perceptions and memory, and it shapes our speech, skill, thoughts and feeling, yet it is perhaps the part of the body which we tend to negelct the most. Despite the enormous capacity of the human brain, on average we use only three percent of our potential brainpower. How to Develop A Super Power Memory
How to Develop A Super Power Memory
By: Harry Lorayne
an accurate and retentive memory is the basis of all business success. In the last analysis, all our knowledge is based on our memories. Plato said it this way, “All knowledge is but rememberance”; whileCicerosaid of memory, it is “the treasury and guardian of all things.” One strong example should suffice for the time being you could not be reading this book right now, if you didn’t remember the sounds of the twenty-six letters of our alphabet! This may seem a bit far fetched to you, but it is true, nevertheless. Actually, if you were to lose your memory completely, you would have to start learning everything from scratch, just like a new born baby. You wouldn’t remember how to dress, or shave, or apply your makeup, or how to drive your car, or whether to use a knife or fork, etc. [download]
