Addiction is a relationship you have with an object (such as a drug or alcohol) or action (such as gambling or having sex). In an addictive relationship, you come to depend on that object or action to meet your emotional needs. For example, a person may eat compulsively to feel comfort, or gamble compulsively to ease loneliness. Often, you and the people around you don’t even realize that an addiction has been formed.
