The Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama

By: Charles and Linda George

Tenzin Gyatso, a man referred to by his followers and admirers as His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, calls himself a simple monk, but he is much more than that. He is a teacher, a religious and spiritual leader, the head of Tibet’s governmentin exile, a world traveler, a noted scholar, an author of numerous books, and a sought-after speaker and lecturer. In 2007, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., to award the Dalai Lama the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: “To millions of believers and admirers, he is a source of wisdom and compassion. To young people, he is a positive example of how to make the world a better place.” Tibetans consider him a symbol of religious freedom and their best hope for independence from Communist China. J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling

By: Bradley Steffens

SHORTLY AFTER SIGNING her first publishing contract in 1996, J.K. Rowling met with her literary agent and executives from her publishing company for lunch. During the meeting, Rowling’s business associates cautioned the first-time author not to get her hopes up about making a lot of money from her book. “When I got into this, my agent said to me, ‘I don’t want you going away from this meeting thinking you’re going to make a fortune,’” Rowling recalled. “Then I said to him, ‘I know I’m not going to make any money out of it. I know I’m not going to be famous.’ All I ever wanted was for somebody to publish Harry so I could go to bookshops and see it.”. [download]

Eminem

Eminem

By: Stephanie Lane

SINCE HE BURST onto the music scene in 1999 with the effervescent rap single “My Name Is,” Eminem has been one of the most talked-about music artists of our time, inspiring both admiration for his technical rhyming and writing talents and shock at the offensive and sometimes brutal subjects that he chooses to rap about. No artist in the past decade has sparked quite as much controversy as Eminem, and no artist in recent history has been loved and hated by so many, in nearly equal measures. Few critics, even those who have praised Eminem’s talents, have been able to ignore the raw hate and anger present in Eminem’s lyrics. At turns witty and shockingly violent, Eminem’s songs have included ribald sexual fantasies about popular celebrities, angry and violent denunciations of homosexuals, and incredibly detailed fantasies about killing his ex-wife, Kim, and his mother, Debbie Mathers-Briggs. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

By: Heidi Hurst

AS A CHILD IN THE MID-1970S, Jennifer Lopez watched movies and dreamed of being a part of them. However, these were pipe dreams for Latinos at this time; very few Latino actors or performers had achieved celebrity status when young Jennifer was growing up. But Lopez did not mind the challenge. She hoped to break down the barriers for Latinos in the entertainment business and prove that when it came to success, it was not about heritage. It was about talent. It was her dream and her commitment that took her from a little girl in Bronx, New York, to becoming one of the world’s biggest superstars. As a Latin girl in the Bronx, Lopez excelled in dance classes and told anyone who would listen that she was going to be a star. In her community, however, she was laughed at. [download]
