Every Thing Must Go
By: James Ladyman and Don Ross
The aim of this book is to defend a radically naturalistic metaphysics. By this we mean a metaphysics that is motivated exclusively by attempts to unify hypotheses and theories that are taken seriously by contemporary science. For reasons to be explained, we take the view that no alternative kind of metaphysics can be regarded as a legitimate part of our collective attempt to model the structure of objective reality. One of our most distinguished predecessors in this attitude is Wilfrid Sellars. He expressed a naturalistic conception of soundly motivated metaphysics when he said that the philosopher’s aim should be ‘knowing one’s way around with respect to the subject matters of all the special [scientific] disciplines’ and ‘building bridges’ between them (1962, 35). It might of course be wondered whether or why science has any role for non-specialist bridge-builders. [download]

How to Survive Your PhD
How to Survive Your PhD
By: Jason R. Karp
When I was in high school, my electronics teacher had a silly, fortune-cookie saying to remind his students not to touch electrical wires with two hands and risk shock: “One hand in pockey, no get shockey.” Like touching wires with both hands, there’s a wrong way to do almost everything. For example, going down a park slide head first, throwing a paper airplane at your high school teacher, and not buying your twin brother a birthday present, instead claiming that you forgot his birthday, would all be considered by most as errors in judgment. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always make the best decisions; but I’ve learned a great deal from my mistakes and, hopefully, you can, too. Life, as we all know, is full of choices. Some choices are big (like where you attend college, who you marry, whether or not you have kids), but some choices are small (like which movie you see, whether you buy a microwave at Target or Walmart,… [download]

The Smoking Horse: A Memoir in Pieces
The Smoking Horse: A Memoir in Pieces
By: Stephen Spotte
The same spring I got kicked out of boarding school Larry turned seventeen and said he was joining the Air Force to fly jets. Plus his mama had just given birth again and the only place left for him to sleep was on the floor. It seemed his mama was forever nursing a baby in the one stuffed chair while his daddy, who always looked tired, leaned against the doorjamb wearing workpants and an undershirt and smoking a cigarette, his suspenders hanging loose, probably because he had nowhere to sit. Now that Larry’s daddy had literally fucked him out of a bed Larry wanted Bob and me to join up too, but Bob couldn’t because ofSharon. He said he needed to stick around. Larry told him that Sharon was an ugly bitch and mean besides; I said I was thinking about college. College? they hooted. You can’t even get through eleventh grade. [download]

For The Greater Good of All
For The Greater Good of All
By: Donelson R. Forsyth and Crystal L. Hoyt
It has been called “the master problem” of social life: What is the connection between the individual and the collective, including groups, organizations, communities, and society itself? Healthy adult human beings can survive apart from other members of the species, yet across individuals, societies, and eras, humans consistently seek inclusion in the collective, where they must balance their personal needs and desires against the demands and requirements of their groups. Some never sink too deeply into the larger collective, for they remain individualists who are so self reliant that they refuse to rely on others or concern themselves with others’ outcomes. Other people, in contrast, put the collective’s interests before their own personal needs, sacrificing personal gain for what is often called “the greater good.” [download]

IF YOU WERE TO answer the question “What are you doing?” or “What’s happening?” at this very moment, you’d likely say you were reading the introduction to a book. Maybe you are looking through this book as you wait outside the venue for some key event to begin. Perhaps, as you read the first few sentences of this book, you glance over your shoulder only to realize that you are standing alongside a very interesting person a person of influence or a celebrity. You can’t help but think to yourself, “Wow! I bet so-and-so would love to know that I’m standing right next to this person!” Now, I know that not every second of your life is as heart-pumping and share-worthy as the moment you realize that you’re literally rubbing elbows with, say, Donald Trump. But whatever it is that you’re doing right now, you’d likely find that someone, somewhere, is curious to hear about it; so, let it be known. [download]

Convictions
Convictions
By: Paul Kurtz
As I write these words I am of an age older than most of those who have taught me, and of almost all of those who will read me. But although considered, and sometimes referred to, as an old man, I feel no different from the days when I set out on my career or from the earlier days when I resolved to add to the store of truth or beauty that inspired me when young. I have been mistaken about many things, some of great importance, and I have modified my views accordingly. But I am not aware of having abandoned any of the ideals that motivated me to run risks, to throw myself into the political movement of my time, to do some rash and foolish things from whose consequences I escaped I know not how, to endure long years of unpopularit, to pit myself against powers and movements that could have easily crushed me. Succeeding with Your Master’s Dissertation
Succeeding with Your Master’s Dissertation
By: John Biggam
A professor was approached by one of her students, who enquired: ‘Is it all right to put bullet points in an essay?’ Another student queried: ‘When you say you want journal articles, how many?’ This tutor was disappointed that her students required their assessment criteria to be explained in such minutiae (Wojtas 2006: 2). What may appear trivial to a dissertation supervisor can be a source of concern to you, the student. A Master’s dissertation involves the production of a substantial piece of work, normally consisting of about 15,000 words, and it is likely that this is the first time you have encountered such a work, in such depth; therefore, it is important that you understand fully what is required of a Master’s student and, equally, how to get through the dissertation journey, from grasping an overview of the main phases of writing a dissertation. 101 Ways to Build Better Relationships with Your Customers
101 Ways to Build Better Relationships with Your Customers
By: Peter R. Garber
Your relationships with your customers can be the most important factor to your success in business. More business is gained or lost as a result of a supplier’s relationship with the customer rather than as a result of their ability to provide a quality service or product. However, as in your dealings with other people in other aspects of your life, building a good relationship with your customers can take a long time to build and only a short time to break down. One incident can damage what you worked hard for a long time, possibly even years, to build. There are many different ways to build stronger working relationships with customers. How ever, there are no absolutes, no necessarily right or wrong ways, and no shortcuts. What might work effectively with one customer could be detrimental or even destructive to your relationship with another customer. [download]

101 Ways to Improve Customer Service
101 Ways to Improve Customer Service
By: Lorraine L. Ulkens
Awareness of the personal view he or she has of self, other people, and the environment creates a certain perspective that affects how a service representative performs a job, interacts with customers, and reacts to situations. Because these individuals often carry the weight of how a customer might evaluate the entire organization, it is imperative that they stay attuned to their capabilities and attitudes. The service representative plays a major role as liaison between the customer and the company. The results of these interactions directly influence the perception that the customer has of the product or service and the company itself. Perception is an individual’s personal understanding or view of things in the world, and perception is a large part of how expectations are formed. Service providers base their impressions of customers on their interactions with them, and customers base their judgments about the company on the attitude and actions of service representatives. Care of Collections
Care of Collections
By: Simon Knell
The collections manager cannot consider the care of collections in isolation; it is neither an end in itself nor can it be divorced from the socio-political circumstances which determine its provision. Museums have rarely developed from national or regional plans. They are invariably the relics of a local decision made by a previous generation in response to the perceived needs of their time. The majority of museums can trace their origins to the collections of ‘great’ men and women, or those of the various learned societies which became fashionable particularly during the nineteenth century. Thus museums as a phenomenon have their own historical dimension, and it is this which often impedes a logical pattern of collection acquisition and care. In both the nature of the material now preserved and the resources currently dedicated to its preservation. [download]

344 Questions-The Creative Person’s
By: Stefan G. Bucher
Sure, if you ask me something specific in person, I can probably be of some service to you. Sumi ink. Compressed air. Second door on the left, up the stairs, ask for Manny. And yes, you can borrow my pen. But beyond that? What can I tell you that isn’t just a good guess at what might be helpful to you? The border between “universal” and “generic” is not always clearly defined. Being specific makes for better reading, but the particulars of my life aren’t yours. And when it comes to life the particulars matter. There are many great how-to books and biographies out there, and even more gorgeous collections of current and classic work to awe and inspire. But looking at catalogs of artistic success won’t make you a better artist any more than looking at photos of healthy people will cure your cold. you’ve got to take action!. [download]

Women, Pleasure and The Gambling Experience
Women, Pleasure and The Gambling Experience
By: Emma Casey
The UK National Lottery was launched in 1994 amidst an unprecedented flurry of publicity. Criticism of its introduction in the UK, the last European country to have a national lottery came from many diverse corners. Particularly vociferous was moral and ethical outrage that the National Lottery provoked and, more than a decade later, continues to provoke. Gambling has long occupied a key position in the popular British cultural imagination. A longing for riches, wealth, and a guiltfree submission to the temptations of consumer society is nothing new, but the National Lottery offered a new and unique vehicle through which people can dream, imagine and fantasise about wealth. Indeed, the ‘jackpot’ has become engrained in our national psyche; it has become a frequent topic of conversation, as synonymous with everyday life and gossip as the football, or reality television. The Power of Full Engagement
The Power of Full Engagement
By: Jim Loehr and Tony Scwartz
We live in digital time. Our rhythms are rushed, rapid fire and relentless, our days carved up into bits and bytes. We celebrate breadth rather than depth, quick reaction more than considered reflection. We skim across the surface, alighting for brief moments at dozens of destinations but rarely remaining for long at any one. We race through our lives without pausing to consider who we really want to be or where we really want to go. We’re wired up but we’re melting down. Most of us are just trying to do the best that we can. When demand exceeds our capacity, we begin to make expedient choices that get us through our days and nights, but take a toll over time. We survive on too little sleep, wolf down fast foods on the run, fuel up with coffee and cool down with alcohol and sleeping pills. [download]

The Art of What Works
The Art of What Works
By: William Duggan
IN 2001, the Nobel Prize in economics went to Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof, and Michael Spence for showing how and why markets again and again fall prey to imperfect information. Stiglitz explains their main idea: “In the field of economics, perhaps the most important break with the past one that leaves open huge areas for future work lies in the economics of information. It is now recognized that information is imperfect, obtaining information can be costly, there are important asymmetries of information, and the extent of information asymmetries is affected by actions of firms and individuals. What this means for business strategy is that you can never predict the future, no matter how hard you try. You can gather more and more data and analyze them night and day, but you still can’t know which strategy will work and which will not. [download]

Personal Development for Smart People
Personal Development for Smart People
By: Steve Pavlina
Do you remember the exact moment you first became interested in personal development? I certainly do. It happened in January 1991 while I was sitting in a jail cell. I’d just been arrested for felony grand theft. This wasn’t my first run-in with the law, so I knew was in trouble. I was 19 years old. I began stealing shortly after moving to Berkeley, California, during my first semester at UC Berkeley. I didn’t steal for money or to build a reputation I stole for the thrill. I was addicted to the surge of adrenaline. The compulsion to steal was so strong that shoplifting was part of my routine, nothing more than my daily espresso. Usually I didn’t care what I stole; it was the act of stealing that seduced me. On a typical outing, I’d lift a dozen candy bars and then drop them off in a public place, figuring that other people would eat them. I didn’t eat the candy because I didn’t think it was healthy. A Hindu legend says we were all once gods. But eventually we abused our powers. Brahma, the chief god, decided to punish us by taking away our divinity. Brahma called a meeting of the other chief gods to figure out where to hide our holiness. One god suggested hiding it deep beneath the earth. “No,” Brahma said, “man will just figure out a way to tunnel miles below the surface.” Another god suggested hiding our holiness at the bottom of the ocean. “No,” Brahma responded, “man will just learn how to dive to the seabed.” A third god came up with the idea of placing our divinity on top of a towering mountain. “No,” Brahma said, “man will just climb every tall mountain on the planet until he finds it.” Stumped, the other gods told Brahma they gave up there didn’t seem to be any place to hide our holiness and keep it out of our reach.
