The Smoking Horse: A Memoir in Pieces
By: Stephen Spotte
The same spring I got kicked out of boarding school Larry turned seventeen and said he was joining the Air Force to fly jets. Plus his mama had just given birth again and the only place left for him to sleep was on the floor. It seemed his mama was forever nursing a baby in the one stuffed chair while his daddy, who always looked tired, leaned against the doorjamb wearing workpants and an undershirt and smoking a cigarette, his suspenders hanging loose, probably because he had nowhere to sit. Now that Larry’s daddy had literally fucked him out of a bed Larry wanted Bob and me to join up too, but Bob couldn’t because ofSharon. He said he needed to stick around. Larry told him that Sharon was an ugly bitch and mean besides; I said I was thinking about college. College? they hooted. You can’t even get through eleventh grade. [download]
