Muslims affirm the Qur’an to be God’s actual words; Muhammad is neither author nor editor, for no human agency influenced the formation of the text. Muhammad does not, therefore, function in the way, for example, the Evangelists do in Christianity. The majority of Christians acknowledge significant human contributions to the creation of their Scriptures. Equally critical for Christians is their belief that God’s power was ever present to guide His human instruments and protect them from errors of faith. The Islamic tradition, on the contrary, is reluctant to allow even this modicum of human involvement in the production of the Qur’an.
