The Dalai Lama
By: Charles and Linda George
Tenzin Gyatso, a man referred to by his followers and admirers as His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, calls himself a simple monk, but he is much more than that. He is a teacher, a religious and spiritual leader, the head of Tibet’s governmentin exile, a world traveler, a noted scholar, an author of numerous books, and a sought-after speaker and lecturer. In 2007, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., to award the Dalai Lama the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: “To millions of believers and admirers, he is a source of wisdom and compassion. To young people, he is a positive example of how to make the world a better place.” Tibetans consider him a symbol of religious freedom and their best hope for independence from Communist China.
