Chileans take pride in their past. Theirs is a rich historical and literary heritage, passed on from generation to generation since the nineteenth century through public and private educational institutions and a lively publishing industry, as well as through the build-up of folk and elitelore. Few Chileans with the rudiments of primary or secondary education are unfamiliar with a set of heroes, events, and national accomplishments that would be the envy of any nation emergent from the western hemispheric independence movements of the 1775-1825 half century. Soon after winning independence from Spainin 1817-1818, Chileans turned to the task of nation-state building. By regional standards they did brilliantly. [download]
