In west-central Oklahoma, about twelve miles south of Weatherford, the town of Colonyhuddles in a small valley thick with trees, a shaded oasis in endless grasslands. A visitor driving through sees first a row of comfortable brick ranch-style homes, complete with expansive, well groomed lawns, patio barbecues, and minivans parked in two car drive ways. A short way down the road is the old town center. An American flag waves above the post office, parked cars point toward a five-table cafe, and here and there stand turn of the century frame houses, some well kept, others abandoned. Nothing unusual. Just a small Oklahomatown. Across the road from the town center a broken sign, lettered in peeling paint, announces Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. [download]
