Saigo Takamori – The Last Samurai

Saigo Takamori – The Last Samurai

By: Mark Ravina

Where was Saigo Takamori’s head? For one frantic morning in 1877 this question consumed the Japanese government. The Japanese imperial army had defeated Saigo’s rebellion. They had reduced his army of thirty thousand fearsome, disgruntled samurai to a few hundred diehards. Then, on the morning of September 24, 1877, government forces launched a final attack on the remnants of the rebel army.Within hours, Saigo’s forces were utterly destroyed. The War of the Southwest, Japan’s bloodiest conflict in more than three hundred years, was over. But the government’s triumph rang hollow. The imperial army had Saigo’s body, but his head was nowhere to be found. Without Saigo’s head the government’s victory was incomplete. [download]
