An Introduction International Criminal Law and Procedure
By: Robert Cryer, Hakan Friman, Darryl Robinson, Elizabeth Wilmshurst
International law typically governs the rights and responsibilities of States; criminal law, conversely, is paradigmatically concerned with prohibitions addressed to individuals, violations of which are subject to penal sanction by a State. The development of a body of international criminal law which imposes responsibilities directly on individuals and punishes violations through international mechanisms is relatively recent. Although there are historical precursors and precedents of and in international criminal law, it was not until the 1990s, with the establishment of the ad hoc Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, that it could be said that an international criminal law regime had evolved. This is a relatively new body of law, which is not yet uniform, nor are its courts universal. [download]

Investment Valuation
Investment Valuation
By: Aswath Damodaran
Every asset, financial as well as real, has a value. The key to successfully investing in and managing these assets lies in understanding not only what the value is but also the sources of the value. Any asset can be valued, but some assets are easier to value than others and the details of valuation will vary from case to case. Thus, the valuation of a share of a real estate property will require different information and follow a different format than the valuation of a publicly traded stock. What is surprising, however, is not the differences in valuation techniques across assets, but the degree of similarity in basic principles. There is undeniably uncertainty associated with valuation. Often that uncertainty comes from the asset being valued, though the valuation model may add to that uncertainty. [download]

Human Resource Management
Human Resource Management
By: Derek Torrington, Laura Hall and Stephen Taylor
Businesses are diverse. Prisons, restaurants, oil companies, corner shops, fire brigades, churches, hotel chains, hospitals, schools, newspapers, charities, doctors’ and dentists’ surgeries, professional sports teams, airlines, barristers’ chambers and universities are all businesses in the sense that they have overall corporate missions to deliver and these have to be achieved within financial constraints. They all need to have their human resources managed, no matter how much some of the resourceful humans may resent aspects of the management process which limit their individual freedom of action. Managing resourceful humans requires a constant balancing between meeting the human aspirations of the people and meeting the strategic and financial needs of the business. [download]

Economic Principles of Law
Economic Principles of Law
By: Cento Veljanovski
Economic Principles of Law applies economics to the doctrines, rules and remedies of the common law. In plain English and using nontechnical analysis, it offers an introduction and exposition of the ‘economic approach’ to law one of the most exciting and vibrant fields of legal scholarship and applied economics. Beginning with a brief history of the field, it sets out the basic economic concepts useful to lawyers and applies these to assess the core areas of the common law property, contract, tort and crime with particular emphasis on their doctrinal structure and remedies. This is done using leading cases drawn from the birthplace of the common law (England and Wales) and other common law jurisdictions. The book serves as a primer to the wider use of economics which has become increasingly important for law students, lawyers, legislators, regulators and those concerned with our legal system generally. Toni Morrison-A Biography
Toni Morrison-A Biography
Edited By: Harold Bloom
Toni Morrison, in a speculative essay on literary canon-making, proposes the difficult critical quest of uncovering the hidden obsession with African- Americans that has haunted the American novel throughout its history. Her principal example is to sketch a reading of Moby-Dick in which Ahab’s manic obsessiveness with the whiteness of the whale becomes a synecdoche for white America’s compulsive relation to the African-American aspects of its culture, past and present. Morrison’s reading is in the mode of D.H. Lawrence’s Studies in Classic American Literature, where what Lawrence saw as the doom of the white race is prefigured in Ahab’s compulsiveness. I am of many minds about Morrison’s critical project, if only because it would give yet another dimension to the unhappy procedure of uncovering just how much of white America cannot be exorcised from African-American fiction. Human Evolution
Human Evolution
By: Camilo J. Cela Conde and Francisco J. Ayala
All organisms are related by descent from common ancestors. Humans and other mammals descend from shrewlike creatures that lived more than 150 million years ago (Ma); mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes share as ancestors aquatic worms that lived 600 Ma; and all plants and animals derive from bacteria-like microorganisms that originated more than 3 billion years ago. Biological evolution is a process of descent with modification. The process consists of two components. Lineages of organisms change through the generations (anagenesis or phyletic evolution); diversity arises because the lineages that descend from common ancestors diverge through time (cladogenesis or lineage splitting, the process by which new species arise).
