SHORTLY AFTER SIGNING her first publishing contract in 1996, J.K. Rowling met with her literary agent and executives from her publishing company for lunch. During the meeting, Rowling’s business associates cautioned the first-time author not to get her hopes up about making a lot of money from her book. “When I got into this, my agent said to me, ‘I don’t want you going away from this meeting thinking you’re going to make a fortune,’” Rowling recalled. “Then I said to him, ‘I know I’m not going to make any money out of it.
