Acting Lessons for Teachers

As new or veteran teachers, we are all constantly struggling with the same goal: helping more students to learn more. A number of factors have been identified as contributing to the differences in student learning, explaining why some students grasp all of the material, some grasp only certain parts of it, and, sadly, some grasp very little. As we look at those factors, it is readily apparent that most relate to differences in the students that exist from the moment they enter our classroom factors such as basic intelligence, family background, learning style, and so on. The proactive teacher trying to improve student learning cannot change such factors. So it is easy to become discouraged. However, one factor is within our control, and that is teacher style. Differences in teachers’ communicative styles do impact the degree to which students learn and learn meaningfully. [download]
