The Esther Scroll

The Esther Scroll

By: David J.A. Clines

Different parts of this book will probably appeal to different people. Septuagintalists will appreciate most Chapter 7 on the non Septuagintal Greek Esther; source-critics may find Chapter 9 interesting, where it is maintained that our ability to analyse sources is not a sufficient reason for concluding they existed; redaction-critics will turn rather to Chapters 3 and 4 where a proposal is made for peeling off late editorial layers from the end of the Scroll; while literary critics may find Chapters 1 and 10 (noting the inclusio) more to their taste, and savour the qualities of this intriguing tale, not only in the final form of the text, but in the various shapes in which it still exists or apparently once existed. With the needs of different readers in mind, I have tried to signpost the beginnings and ends of chapters with some account of the argument, so that the complete interlocking thesis of the book can be comprehended without reading every chapter right through.
